Irish Bars of Charleston
Irish Pubs of Charleston
There's a few local pubs where the Irish hang out in Charleston.
Prohibition Charleston downtown is owned by James Walsh from Belfast. It's downtown on King Street, in the heart of the nightlife district. High end cocktails & food. They have music most nights too.
The Celt Irish Pub in Mt Pleasant has just opened in the old McCanns bar in Brickyard. Danny & Áine Burns from Donegal are the owners, and both are top musicians. The stage is at the heart of the bar, so you can expect quality music there. Tuesday night is trad session night.
O'Brions in Mt Pleasant is where a lot of the group go there for after work drinks. You'll find them outside on the patio or just listen for the noise. A good pint of Guinness in a 20oz pour.
Seanachai on John's Island is the closest thing you'll find to a snug in Charleston. Gerry Kieran was the heart and soul behind Seanachai. Gerry has moved on to different pastures, but his spirit remains in the building. There's a big outdoor space in the back where you'll find a lot of the Irish lads on Thursdays after their football.
Madra Rua in Park Circle is the longest running Irish owned pub in Charleston. Owned by Dublin Stephen O'Connor, when you're in Madra, you feel like you're in a pub at home. They show a lot of football matches. Home of the Liverpool, Celtic & Wrexham supporters clubs.
Dunleavy's is the first thing you'll see when you drive onto Sullivan's Island. You can't miss the Irish flag. I spent many nights here in my early Charleston days. Enjoy a beachy vibe with your Guinness.
Tommy Condon's downtown is a favorite for the tourists. There's a good atmosphere & Irish music at the weekends. Doug & Joe behind the bar have been working there for 25 years, great characters.
Ireland's Own in West Ashley isn't Irish owned, but Shane from Armagh is behind the bar for the big rugby matches.
